WOKING EVENT 2011

Introduction BY Roger Carr

The idea for the event was borne out of my thirty years of experience on the General Council of the BS and the many suggestions I have received over those years from numerous members. I decided that as I am now semi-retired the time was right for me to throw myself into organising two early season events that utilised my experience and the members’ suggestions. I therefore proposed to the BS that they should conduct a two year experiment in taking the Society to the members and other bird enthusiasts by organising and sponsoring events aimed at providing an early season get together in various parts of the UK. These events to embrace all aspects of the Budgerigar Fancy under one roof and contain something for the potential budgerigar breeder. I am pleased to say that the BS agreed with this proposal and authorised two trial events to be organised by a committee comprising of Fred Wright Dave Whittaker and myself. Instructions were given for the first event to be organised in the South and the second in the North of England with the proviso that if they were successful the experiment would be continued in future years in other parts of the United Kingdom. We can now only hope that you will find our efforts worthwhile but for those who think they can add to the present arrangements there will be a suggestion box available on the Budgerigar Society stand. Roger Carr

The Venue
Woking Leisure Centre is situated in a spacious park with ample parking and many other adjacent facilities including a children’s playground and public swimming bath. The Leisure Centre building is on two levels with the show and bird fair being held on the ground floor with direct access for exhibitors and traders at the rear of the building. Follow the budgie arrows marked Exhibitors and Traders for these entrances. The lecture room and the cafeteria facilities are on the first floor and are best approached from the front of the building through the main car park. Follow the budgie arrows marked Lectures for this entrance. Please note that easy disabled access is available to both levels and a lift is available for movement between levels.

The Hotel
The Holiday Inn is situated on the inner ring road and is within five minutes walking distance of a substantial and impressive shopping centre and ten minutes of the Leisure Centre. The hotel provides all the normal facilities including a large comfortable lounge. Breakfast will be taken in the dining room but the two evening meals will be taken in a separate room set out to suit our requirements. If you have any preferred company at the dinner dance please advice us on your deposit form. Every effort will be made to accommodate individual requests but it must be remembered that only so many can sit at any one table. Parking will be in the adjacent Municipal Car Park which has an access direct to the hotel. A special parking rate has been negotiated by the hotel for all residents subject to them being advised on arrival of your requirements.

Wimbledon Dogs
An event devised for the sporting members of the fancy. Transport to the event will be provided from and to the Holiday Inn Hotel at cost. Admission to the stadium will be £5.00 and our racing advisor, Fred Bet, recommends that the best seats in the house are to be found in the restaurant where a meal can be obtained for approximately £25.00. Depending on demand and requirements Fred Bet thinks a better deal can be negotiated so please indicate if you would like a meal on your booking form.

Friday Evening Buffet
This is basically an informal affair that provides a chance to have a chat and a drink with your friends. The only formal part of the evening will be a welcoming speech from the 2010 BS president Dave Herring after which the buffet will be declared open. The cost of tickets to this event is £15.00 each and must be pre-booked with a deposit through Dave Whitaker at the BS office.

The Show
Many thanks are extended to the London and Southern Counties Budgerigar Society who have kindly agreed to provide the staging and all necessary experience to organise the show. Because of the timing of the event it was decided to drop the normal young bird classes in favour of 2010 bred classes which will allow members to show all those late bred against birds bred in the same year as opposed to the normal situation where they would have to be shown in the any age section. The any age section is designed for birds wearing 2009 rings or before but is limited to owner bred birds only. Judging will be undertaken by four colour judges and two section judges with all six of them coming together to judge the five major specials. Each of the four colour judges will be allocated a normal colour as their first assignment and thereafter they will be given the next available colour according to schedule order. To speed up the judging process the section judges will be placing all first prize winners that have not won a spot in one to ten order on separate judging stands. The judging of major specials will take place at 4.30 pm and can be viewed from the balcony outside the lecture room. Sale classes have been omitted from the show in favour of sales tables to members at £10.00 per six foot table within the bird fair. Admission to the show will be £5.00 per day with free transfer to the bird fair/ sale after 10.00 am on Sunday.

The Lectures
By acquiring the services of Gerald Binks and Reinhard Molkentin the organising committee consider they have master minded a real coup. Both of these gentlemen command worldwide respect within the fancy and both have stated that it is definitely their last appearance on the lecture stage. This is therefore your last chance to hear these iconic figures performing before a mass audience and it may well be prudent to bring along your pencil and paper to take notes on those all important aspects of the hobby that could make all the difference to your future success. Whilst Gerald and Reinhard will be imparting valuable knowledge on breeding and exhibiting, Janice and Ghalib Al Nasser will be giving the members and judges an insight as to how the BS expects the new judging guidelines to be implemented. This is a must not miss lecture as its contents will set the scene for the forthcoming show seasons. The final lecture will be from Ruth Manvell and is designed to give an insight into the importance of avian virology. This lecture will be of interest to all bird keepers and is open to both members and none members. Please note that there is no admission charge to all lectures.

The Coach Trips
Designed to accommodate the interests of the budgie breeder’s partners or friends, the venues have been chosen for their proximity to Woking and for their horticultural and historical values. Both venues have restaurants, cafes and a gift shop available within the grounds. Wisley Gardens provide a magnificent range of feature gardens which always reflect the time of year in the species that are in bloom. For those who cannot resist a purchase there is a large garden centre with a tremendous range of plants and equipment available. Hampton Court also has some wonderful gardens which include the famous maze and the chance to walk along the banks of the Thames. Not to be missed is a look around the palace which gives a great insight into the lives of our Tudor ancestors. The cost of these trips is £20.00 to Wisley Gardens and £23.00 to Hampton Court Palace.

The Dinner Dance
This is a more formal affair with Peter Hutchinson acting as Master of Ceremonies. A set menu meal will be followed by a speech and toast to the BS by the 2011 President Dave Hislop. Entertainment will be provided in two sessions by Ben Jenkins, a traditional vocalist with a large repertoire of popular songs. His first session will be for watching and listening whilst his second session will allow those who wish to dance to take to the floor.

The Organising Committee

Fred Wright
Fred has spent most of his life involved in budgerigars and has featured in several successful partnerships. He now prefers to plough his own furrow and in recent years has produced many top quality budgerigars. As a judge and administrator he is well known within the fancy. He has also contributed many interesting and sometimes controversial articles to the fancy press. His skills as an organiser have been utilised in many areas and he brings to this event his wealth of knowledge in arranging all types of budgerigar events and bird sales.

Dave Whittaker
For many years Dave was devoted to the management of Boreham Wood Cage Bird Society and it is from this background that he progressed through the South Midland Area Society onto the BS General Council. In 1994 he was appointed secretary of the BS. but subsequently found that the pressure of keeping a stud of budgerigars, judging budgerigars and the need to constantly attend weekend meetings on behalf of the Society was making him a dull boy. He therefore took the wise decision to drop keeping and judging budgerigars in favour of walking the countryside and flying his Harris Hawk.

Roger Carr
Roger joined the BS in 1957 and has spent the past thirty years as a General Councillor. During this period of time he has helped to drive through many of the projects that have kept the BS at the forefront of the hobby. Although well known on the national and international scene he still maintains his affinity with the local societies and takes great pleasure from his involvement with the cage bird clubs of Princes Risborough, High Wycombe and Oxford 1910.

The Show Team

Ron Pearce - Show Manager
A member of the BS since 1977 and currently in partnership with his international colleague Marcel Buhler from Switzerland. Ron is well known for his globe trotting as a judge and lecturer and brings to the event a wealth of experience and knowledge in the administration of prominent budgerigar events.

Janet Jeffery - Show Secretary
Janet joined the BS in partnership with her husband, Tony, in 2002 and has since become an integral part of many show teams in the South of England as Show Secretary.

Ian Fordham - Bio Security
A name that is synonymous with Lutinos. Ian joined the BS in 1972 and in recent years has produced some of the best Lutinos ever seen in the world. He now operates from a small compact aviary where the key word is quality.

Paul Tiller - London and Southern Counties/BS Liaison Officer
A chartered accountant with company secretarial experience at international level and now making a name for himself as a very successful novice exhibitor.

The Judges

John Alcock Challenge Certificates and Major Awards
John joined the BS in 1981 and is currently in partnership with Dave Hislop. As a judge has extensively travelled the UK with his North West pals and is well known for his good humour and forthright comments. He featured on the General Council of the BS for a few years but eventually decided that his talents would be better expressed elsewhere.

Geoff Tuplin Challenge Certificates and Major Awards
A man devoted to producing and judging top class budgies. Since being appointed as a judge, Geoff has kindly offered to provide a bird for fund raising at the event. It is this type of generosity that defines the man.

Robert Ellis Challenge Certificates and Major Awards
Robert joined the BS in 1970 and is one of two Scottish judges that have been invited to officiate at the event. It will be good to see a new face in the South of England and it is hoped that by engaging him it will stimulate more exhibitors to come to the show.

Peter Hutchinson Challenge Certificates and Major Awards
Through his vibrant personality and general good humour Peter has become an integral part of many BS events. As usual he will be multi tasking by being a judge and master of ceremonies at the dinner/dance. To both tasks he will bring that degree of professionalism which has gained respect throughout the fancy.

Ian Clark Sections and Major Awards
Ian joined the BS in 1989 and in his relatively short career in has already contributed much to the fancy in the North East of England. He was a General Councillor for a short time and has helped at the BS Club Show. Like Robert he will be a new face in the South and it is hoped many will take the opportunity to show their birds under him.

Grant Findlay Sections and Major Awards
If you have not heard of Grant Findlay then you must be a complete newcomer to the world of budgerigars. Grant has been there and got the badge for the majority of positions within the fancy. He has been chairman and president of the BS and a long time BS delegate to the World Budgerigar Organisation. As a judge he has officiated all over the world. Wherever he goes he is invariably found a job and this event will be no different as he multi tasks as judge, lecture chairman and general understudy to all.

The Lecturers

Ghalib and Janice Al Nasser
An internationally known partnership that is fondly referred to as the Mr and Mrs of world budgerigars, they have judged and talked in many parts of the world and are respected wherever they go for their dedication to the fancy. They have served on the General Council of the BS for many years and both have been president of our great society. Ghalib has also established himself as one of the best administrators in budgerigars through his role as secretary of the World Budgerigar Organisation.

Gerald Binks
B is for budgerigar and for Binks. The two have been inextricably linked ever since Gerald started breeding quality budgerigars and have been further cemented by the many innovations he has brought to the fancy. The introduction of the Budgerigar World Magazine and the promoting of the first Budgerigar World Show at Sandown race course certainly set the scene for the future. His ability to breed quality budgerigars has stood the test of time and by writing The Challenge he placed on paper a first class insight into how it should be done. Gerald says this is definitely his last lecture so do not miss the final chance to pick up tips from one of the world’s best known authorities on budgerigars.

Reinhard Molkentin
Reinhard has been at the forefront of breeding and exhibiting world class budgerigars for many years. His initial success was forged in his native country of Germany but since moving to South Africa he has made progress that needs to be seen to be believed. With his power point presentation he will demonstrate how he has developed. Reinhard also says this will be his final lecture so once again do not miss this last chance in a lifetime.

Ruth Manvell
Ruth emigrated to Australia in 1970 and it is here that she commenced her career in virology. On return to the UK in 1978 she joined the Central Veterinary Laboratory in Surrey working on avian viruses and subsequently progressed to be head of the avian virology diagnostic unit. It was Ruth’s team at the Laboratory that identified the reovirus that threatened our fancy in 2006 and it is thanks to her department that major problems were averted. Just recently she has decided to work part time which will allow her to enjoy her hobbies which include an interest in Raptors and the reintroduction of the Great Bustard to England.

Backroom Staff

Dave Herring - BS President 2010 and Official Event Reporter
Dave and his brother John have been part of the furniture for the fancy in the north east since they joined the BS in 1959. Both are renowned for their down to earth, keep it simple and let the membership have their say approach to the fancy. For health reasons John has recently been forced to take a back seat but Dave continues to promote the hobby wherever possible. His contributions to “Ask the Expert” in Cage and Aviary Birds are well received and his ability to catch and commit to paper the main theme of a lecture is second to none.

Dave Hislop - BS President 2011 and Lecture Chairman
Dave will become BS president at the AGM and from then on will undertake all the usual duties of presenting prizes and offering thanks to those who have contributed to the event. He will also act as a Lecture Chairman. For several years Dave has been vice chairman of the BS and is also a well known figure on the judging circuit. He currently shows in partnership with John Alcock.

Mick Freakley - Official Photographer
Mick is renowned for the quality of his budgerigar photography and over the years has taken pictures of most of the best budgerigars in the UK. As a member of the very successful Freakley and Ainley partnership he has also experienced great success on the show bench which peaked when they won Best in Show at the 2007 and 2008 Budgerigar Society Club Shows.

Janet Carr - Coach Outing Hostess
A long time supporter of the BS Janet was volunteered for this position by her husband.

George Booth - BS Chairman
George has been a member of the BS since 1970 and became Society Chairman in 2008. As the principal officer he is ultimately responsible for everything that happens within the Society, but it is hoped that after the AGM he will be able to sit back, relax and enjoy himself for the rest of the weekend.
