Best of Colour: K Leedham – Light Green cock – L1833.75.09
Jim McGeehan selected as the Best of Colour K Leedham’s Light Green
cock, commenting: “ This was a nice Light Green cock with a good deep
body colour, good width of head and directional feather; a stylish bird that
was well balanced and, while the spots could have been slightly better, was
a worthy winner.
In second place came Newton & Shepherdson’s Light Green cock; another
nice bird, well spotted and demonstrating good head qualities. This bird was
well presented and was mainly to be faulted by slight opalescence around the
neckline.
Placed third was a good sized Light Green cock bird, with plenty of width
shown by D A Turner; preparation of the bird could have been better; it was
difficult to get it to perch, otherwise it may well have finished higher
Best Opposite Sex was D McKeown’s nice Light Green hen, well benched
in the Beginner section; it had a good, even body colour, with a bit of style,
Best of Colour; K Leedha,. 2nd Newton & Shepherdson, 3rd D A Turner.
4th D McKeown, 5th Moorhouse & Spruce, 6th C & M Snell, 7th S Finlay,
8th N Johnston, 9th S Collins.
Jim commented that overall he felt that the standard in this colour group was quite poor, with a lot of birds having short tails, missing flights and poor presentation. There were several wrong classed birds, with Dark Greens shown as Light Greens.
Young Bird
Best of Colour: R J Allen – Light Green cock – RJA1.25.10
The Challenge Certificate winner was a Light Green cock benched by R J
Allen. This was a good bird with nice even body colour, nicely prepared
and presented but Judge, Jim McGeehan said that he would have liked to have
seen a bit more width in the head.
Runner up was a good Light green cock benched by J & C Huxley; this
was another bird of good body colour, but this one was lacking in spot and
he was unsettled in the cage, so did not give himself the best chance of
finishing higher.
Third and Best Opposite Sex was benched by P Ward: this was a nice young
hen with good width of face, but lacking in spot; a good stock hen, which
could have been better prepared for the show.
Best of Colour; R J Allen, 2nd J & C Huxley, 3rd P Ward, 4th Pearce & Pears, 5th J Newall, 6th A & D Woan, 7th D A Turner, 8th S Finlay.
The judges’ final comment was that, as with the any age birds, the standard was disappointing. There may be several reasons for this and some of the young birds should go on to become nice adults”

Best of Colour: Norwood Stud – Dark Green cock – JP111.68.09
Colin Lamb selected as the Challenge certificate winner a Dark Green cock
benched by the Norwood Stud. His comments on this bird were that although
the spots on this bird could have been better placed, it was a bird of good
quality with plenty of top-end and It stood well throughout judging.
Another Dark Green from the Norwood stud, this time a hen was placed second
and best opposite Sex. This was an outstanding Dark Green hen with good
length and spots. It had very good even colour however, it lacked the final
head quality of the winner.
In third place was a Dark Green cock benched by Moorhouse & Spruce,
which had very good width of face and a deep mask but marred somewhat by
slight opalescence and its colour was not quite as deep as the first two.
Best of Colour; Norwood Stud, 2nd Norwood Stud, 3rd Moorhouse & Spruce, 4th S & B Squires, 5th E & M Nee, 6th S Finlay.
Colin felt that this colour section was of a good standard throughout.
Young Bird
Best of Colour: P D White – Dark Green hen – W3766.11.10

that this was a hen that asked to be judged and highly placed. A very good

Second and Best Opposite Sex was a Dark Green cock benched by Quigley &
Watson, and this was a young cock that pushed the hen for first place, but
was short of one flight.
R & J & W Bowker benched the bird placed third; this was a bird
which had a nice face but had a tail feather missing and it was not quite
as long in the body as the leading two.

the winner and with a touch of flecking – still a nice bird.

Best of Colour: B E Sweeting – Cobalt hen – S5555.17.09
Dave Collier awarded the Challenge certificate to Brian Sweeting’s
powerful, well bodied Cobalt hen , which had a very good cap and depth of
mask. She was shown in very good condition, but unfortunately her tail was
slightly short.
Second bets and Best Opposite Sex went to R & M Miller’s Cobalt
Cock, which was shown in very good condition. The back line of this bird
was slightly poor, but this was more than offset by a head that showed a
very good cap with good frontal rise.
In third place was a Violet cock shown by A Fretton. This was a good long
bird which sat very well throughout judging, but showed one shadow spot.
Best of Colour; B E Sweeting, 2nd R & M Miller, 3rd A Fretton, 4th D Jukes, 5th S Wildes, 6th D Norman, 7th Swain & Ford, 8th D Jukes, 9th G Cameron 10th J T McNulty.
Dave commented that the overall standard was quite good, despite some missing flights and thus a fall-back in condition, but there were some good quality dark blues here.
Young Bird
Best of Colour: B E Sweeting – Cobalt cock – S5555.50.10
A cobalt cock benched by B E Sweeting won this Challenge Certificate. This
was an excellent youngster with good length, width and mask and showed a

Best of Colour: L Martin – Grey Green cock – LPM1.70.09
Best of Colour was L Martin’s superb Grey Green cock. Jeff commented
that this bird had width of head and frontal rise of a quality that he had
never judged before. Staged in excellent condition; it went on to be Best
in Show and a very worthy winner. The cock that was second in the class
displayed very little difference in quality, another superb bird.
In second place was Moorhouse & Spruce’s Grey Green cock. This
was another outstanding cock that won the Best in Show award last year.
Jeff told us that this bird was shown in outstanding condition, other than
a few pin feathers, and displayed fine deportment, but didn’t quite
have the frontal rise and width of the winner.
Third in the line-up was benched by S & B Squires. This was a good solid
bird with excellent shoulder, depth of mask and good spots, but spoiled
by slight opalescence.
Best Opposite Sex was a Grey Green hen from the stud of J O’Neil.
Clearly the best of the hens; this was shown in excellent feather condition
and had excellent deportment with very good width of head – but not
so well de-spotted!
Best of Colour; L Martin, 2nd Moorhouse & Spruce, 3rd S & B Squires, 4th C P Spruce, 5th S J Roberts, 6th J O’Neil, 7th B E Sweeting, 8th Moorhouse & Spruce, 9th G Cameron, 10th Richardson Partnership.
Jeff commented that the colour group overall was a little disappointing, with many cases of poor feather condition and several absentees which spoiled the section. With the exception of the top half dozen the competition was lacking.
Young Bird
Best of Colour: R & J & W Bowker – Grey Green hen – BOWK5.59.10
Jeff Attwood describes how he placed these birds: The Challenge certificate
winner was benched by R & J & W Bowker. This was a really beautiful
hen with exceptional head quality and shown in excellent condition. One
of the few birds which exhibited the much talked about ‘buffalo effect’.
Congratulations to this up and coming stud.
Second and Best Opposite Sex was C & M Snell’s young cock, a very
good bird excelling in size, shoulder, width of face and head quality but
a little lacking in depth of mask
Third place was a Grey Green hen benched by B E Sweeting. This was a lovely
hen of exceptional quality in all departments. I only wish she had let me
see her better, as she could have been placed higher were she not so unsteady.
Best of Colour; R & J & W Bowker, 2nd C & M Snell, 3rd B E Sweeting, 4th M & D Walker, 5th E Newall, 6th L & S Devaney, 7th Ward & Rogers, 8th W J Mear, 9th K Austin.
Jeff thought that the overall quality of the young birds exceeded the adults.
There were some excellent specimens throughout- a really good section to
have judged. He went on to add that he felt that the quality overall was,
with few exceptions, the best for several years. There were some exceptional
birds which have moved the goal posts forward yet again.
It is disappointing that we can’t attract a greater entry, but with
increasing traffic congestion and increased travelling time, coupled with
much higher costs are I feel the factors that are helping to keep the entry
down.

Best of Colour: P Greenwood – Grey cock – G3675.149.09
Alan writes: Best of Colour was P Greenwood’s good thick-faced bird,
which stood well whilst being judged. It was benched in good body condition
and was a very worthy winner.
Second was R & J & W Bowker’s Grey cock; also a good Grey
cock with good frontal, but not quite the back-skull of the winning bird,
but a good all round exhibit.
Third was J & C Huxley’s Grey cock; a bird with a wonderful top
end, but not quite of the body size of the leading two exhibits.
Best Opposite Sex was benched by Freakley & Ainley. This was a superb,
thick faced hen which was placed fourth in line-up and eventually went on
to be Best Opposite Sex Any Age in Show.
Best of Colour; P Greenwood, 2nd R & J & W Bowker, 3rd J & C Huxley, 4th Freakley & Ainley, 5th D A Turner, 6th G Cameron, 7th T Price, 8th L & S Devaney, 9th G Cameron.

Young Bird
Best of Colour: Norwood Stud – Grey hen – JP111.9.10

benched by the Norwood Stud. This young hen excelled in quality throughout
and was an easy winner that went on to be awarded Best Young Bird in Show
and Best Opposite Sex in Show.
Second Best and Best opposite Sex was a wide headed Grey cock benched by
R & M Miller. This youngster was shown in wonderful condition and was
the winner of a quality class.
Third place was awarded to R & J & W Bowker ‘s lovely faced

poor on the day.
Best of Colour; Norwood Stud, 2nd R & M Miller, 3rd R & J &
W Bowker, 4th Newton & Shepherdson, 5th D J Brick, 6th B Lander, 7th
P Hodgkins, 8th L & S Devaney, 9th C P Spruce, 10th G Cameron.

Best of Colour: C L Bowman – Opaline Dark Green cock – NB21.120.09
An Opaline Dark Green cock benched in good condition by C L Bowman was
the Challenge Certificate winner. Lyn says that it was not the biggest Opaline
she had ever seen, but it was in good condition with a nice clean cap and
it did look a lot better when relaxed.
Second and Best Opposite Sex was benched by A Cameron. This was an Opaline
Dark Green hen that showed patchy body colour and slight shadow ticking.
An excellent Opaline Light Green cock benched by R & J & W Bowker
was placed third but unfortunately was spoiled by being flecked.
Best of Colour; C L Bowman, 2nd A Cameron, 3rd R & J & W Bowker, 4th K Jackson, 5th P Tiller.
Lyn commented: “I have to admit not being an Opaline lover generally. The birds today (too few) suffered from the Opaline disease, many being heavily marked or ticked. Gone are the days when Opalines were paired to Opalines to produce the clear “V”.
Young Bird
Best of Colour: M & T Rogers – Opaline Light Green hen – MTR1.62.10
Lyn awarded the Challenge Certificate to M & T Roger’s Opaline
Light Green hen commenting that it was true to say that she had flights
missing, but the selection was limited.
A nice clean Opaline Light Green cock was placed second and Best Opposite
Sex was benched by S J Roberts. This was a nice bird but lacked head quality.
Third was a typy young Opaline Light green hen that had some shadow head
flecking benched by S Finlay.
Best of Colour; M & T Rogers, 2nd S J Roberts, 3rd S Finlay, 4th S Finlay.
Lyn was disappointed with this section as there were only the four birds in the line-up; adding it would have been nice to have a few more.

Best of Colour: Main & Jenkins – Opaline Grey Green cock – J2735.77.09
Geoff awarded the Challenge Certificate to an Opaline Grey Green cock that
he said was a nice tidy cock of good type, with good clean cap and good
width; nice markings and good mask, but with one spot missing, but still
a good winner on the day.
Second and Best Opposite Sex was G P Sutton’s clean Opaline Grey Green
hen of very good mask and clean cap, but staged slightly out of condition
and very unsteady when judged.
Third was R Witherwick’s Opaline Grey Green cock was slightly smaller
than the winner with which it otherwise shared good points and slight faults.
Best of Colour; Main & Jenkins, 2nd G P Sutton, 3rd R Witherwick, 4th Ward & Rogers, 5th A M Carr.
Geoff said that there were only a few birds in this line-up and many of them were out of condition. Ticking spoiled others and the overall quality dropped off after the first few.
Young Bird
Best of Colour: Main & Jenkins – Opaline Grey Green hen – MG1.112.10
Best of Colour was Main & Jenkins’ Opal Grey Green Hen; a nice
bird benched in good condition and showing a clean cap with good mask but
with one spot missing.
Second place and the Best Opposite Sex came from the stud of J Newall. This
was a nice Opaline Grey Green cock that was long in body but marred by rather
heavy markings. However, it had a nice clean cap with good mask and spots,
but was rather unsteady when judged.
C Kirk from the Beginner section benched a nice bird with good shoulder
but with heavy markings to take the third spot. This had a nice face and
mask, but was also ticked. Nevertheless, a very useful beginner bird.
Best of Colour; Main & Jenkins, 2nd J Newall, 3rd C Kirk, 4th D A Turner, 5th Main & Jenkins.
Only a small number of birds, unfortunately nearly all out of show condition on the day was Geoff’s comment on this line-up

benched by M J & S L Banks. He said that this was a good powerful bird
with plenty of size but it was rather unsteady when judged.
In second place was another Opaline Grey cock. Benched by Moorhouse &
Spruce; it was another large bird but unfortunately it tended to lie across
the perch, which spoiled its overall balance.
Third place was taken by D Jukes’ Opaline Grey cock, another large
bird which was not quite as wide in the head as the first two.
Best Opposite Sex was an Opaline Grey hen benched in good condition by G

Best of Colour; M J & S L Banks, 2nd Moorhouse & Spruce, 3rd D Jukes, 4th J Horspool, 5th G P Sutton, 6th A M Carr.

Best of Colour: M & T Rogers – Opaline Grey hen – MTR1.69.10

good feather condition – a pleasure to put it first.
In second place came Moorhouse & Spruce’s Cinnamon Grey Green

T & A Luke’s Opaline Cinnamon Grey Green hen won this Challenge
Certificate. Norma described this winner as a nice overall example with
nice feather. She sat well while being judged and the slight ticking on
her cap did not present as a major fault.
Second and best Opposite Sex was N Johnston’s Opaline Cinnamon Light

spots did not present well, falling into a split mask which spoilt the balance
of the face.
Third was a bird from the junior section. T Salem benched an Opaline Cinnamon
Dark Green hen which was a nice overall bird although short in the mask;
sadly exhibited on the day without tail.
Best of Colour; T & A Luke, 2nd N Johnstone, 3rd T Salem, 4th D McKeown, 5th A M Carr.
Norma says that she felt that this was a poor certificate to judge, although the winner exhibited by T & A Luke was a nice example.

Norma said that this was a good quality group with some birds benched both in size and good colour.
Young Bird
Best of Colour: I Fordham – Lutino hen – LSF345.12.10
I Fordham completed yet another double at the Club show when his young
Lutino hen won the Challenge Certificate, making him the winner of both
the Any Age and the Young Bird Certificates. This was another example of
the quality of his Lutinos and again, a good winner, standing well to be
judged. It was benched in good condition and feather.
Second best and the Best Opposite Sex was a Lutino cock from the stud of
A W Jennings. This youngster was a good example of colour in Lutinos; having
a nice deep shade of yellow. He stood well in the show cage and was a good
runner up to the winner.
I Fordham benched a Lutino cock to take the third spot; this was a good
third place winner, smart and in good overall condition.
Best of Colour;I Fordham, 2nd A W Jennings, 3rd I Fordham, 4th J W Mitchell, 5th D J Brick, 6th M & D Walker, 7th R Whiteside, 8th R Whiteside.
Norma stated that this was a good certificate to judge, with good quality birds coming to the front.

Best of Colour: D G Bowley – Albino cock – B2688.21.08
Nigel awarded the Challenge Certificate to D G Bowley’s Albino cock,
a bird that he described as, “a super bird with all round qualities
and excellent stance and good feather”.
Second place and Best Opposite Sex went to C B Dew’s very nice hen
shown in good condition, but let down by a shortish tail.
In third place was G Cameron’s Albino cock which was a nice fair-coloured
cock, but lacked the size of the first two.
Best of Colour; D G Bowley, 2nd C B Dew, 3rd G Cameron, 4th J Newall, 5th C M Fuller, 6th C M Fuller, 7th S Wildes, 8th K Simpson, 9th G Cameron.
Nigel commented that generally, condition or colour was a problem throughout the birds, but despite this, there were some nice ones.
Young Bird
Best of Colour: A Kelly - Albino hen – ARK1.58.10
The Challenge Certificate was awarded to A Kelly’s young Albino hen
that the judge, Nigel Beevers said was a nice hen and a decent colour for
the variety.
D G Bowley benched an Albino cock to take third place and Best Opposite
Sex, a bird that Nigel said was a good bird but could not match the winner
for colour quality.
Third came J W Mitchell’s young bird which failed in size compared
to the first two.
Best of Colour: A Kelly, 2nd D G Bowley, 3rd J W Mitchell, 4th C M Fuller, 5th R Danks, 6th P W Burgess, 7th S Wildes, 8th K Austin, 9th K Austin.
Nigel said that he felt that the quality of exhibit dropped significantly after the first two.

Best of Colour: R Day – Yellow-wing Dark Green cock – D3640.182.09
The Challenge Certificate winner was R Day’s Yellow-wing Dark Green
cock that went on to become the best Clearwing in Show. Lyn recalls that
this was a bird of good size and showing excellent width of head, enhanced
by a clean cap, but added that a couple of flights were missing on the right
hand side.
Second in the line-up and best Opposite Sex was Guppy & Barnes with
a Yellow-wing Dark Green Hen, which displayed good balance and deportment
with excellent depth of body colour. Dark primary flights and tail tended
to spoil the overall effect.
In third place came A G Beasley’s hen which displayed good wing markings
and was nicely presented, although a little untidy around the tail.
Best of Colour; R Day, 2nd Guppy & Barnes, 3rd A G Beasley. 4th A G Beasley, 5th E Newall, 6th M Anzara, 7th M & D Walker, 8th A D M Tait, 9th A D M Tait.
Lyn felt that the quality of the birds fell away in the lower sections and there really were not enough of them which was very disappointing.
Young Bird
Best of Colour: Guppy & Barnes – Yellow-wing Dark Green hen – DD2.37.10
Lyn awarded the Challenge Certificate to a Yellow-wing Dark Green hen benched
by Guppy & Barnes and said that it had a good depth of body colour,
enhanced by a clean cap. Unfortunately, she was a little flighty in the
show cage and didn’t display herself to the best advantage.
Another exhibit from the stud of Guppy & Barnes, a Yellow-wing Light
Green cock was placed second in the line-up and also Best Opposite Sex of
Colour. It was benched in excellent condition but just lacked that little
something.
E Newall, from the Junior ranks, staged a Yellow-wing Light Green cock that
was placed third; Lyn adding that this youngster was well prepared and presented.
Best of Colour: Guppy & Barnes, 2nd Guppy & Barnes, 3rd E Newall, 4th M Anzara, 5th A D M Tait, 6th A D M Tait.
Lyn’s final comment on this line-up was that apart from the first two, it was very disappointing. Once again the numbers weren’t there.

Best of Colour: R Docherty – Whitewing Skyblue cock – D4243.3.07
The Any Age Whitewing Challenge Certificate was taken by R Docherty’s
Whitewing Skyblue cock; a stylish bird from north of the border. Although
the bird itself was clean and tidy, Lyn would have liked to have seen it
in a better show cage.
Second place went to R Day’s Whitewing Cobalt cock, a good bird, but
its tail feathers could have done with a more even shade.
Third and Best Opposite Sex was Guppy & Barnes Whitewing Violet hen,
which displayed good depth of body colour that brought with it a darkening
of the wings.
Best of Colour: R Docherty, 2nd R Day, 3rd Guppy & Barnes, 4th A G Beasley, 5th A D M Tait, 6th M & D Walker, 7th A G Beasley, 8th A D M Tait.
Lyn said that there was more competition in this group, but it still amounted to a deeply disappointing lack of numbers.
Young Bird
Best of Colour: R Day – Whitewing Cobalt hen – D3640.118.10
The Whitewing Cobalt hen benched by R Day won this challenge Certificate
and was a beautiful young hen; a lovely clean looking bird of nice contrast
and good wing markings.
Second place and Best Opposite Sex was a Whitewing Violet Cobalt cock staged
by Guppy & Barnes. This youngster had a really nice body colour but
its dark primary flights and a lack of head quality marred its prospects
of further success.
Third came from the stud of M Anzara; another hen which needed more contrast
to stand out in a crowd.
Best of Colour; R Day, 2nd Guppy & Barnes, 3rd M Anzara, 4th T & J Rivers, 5th A D M Tait, 6th A D M Tait, 7th T & J Rivers.
Lyn’s final comment was that the line-up fell away after the first two.

Full Circular Crested Dominant Pied Skyblue cock – C5701.109.09
Cheatley & Alcorn won this Challenge Certificate with a Full Circular
Crested Dominant Pied Skyblue cock that was in good condition and with an
excellent crest. A worthy winner all round, and enhanced by its good size.
Second was S W Beach’s Full Circular Crested Cinnamon Skyblue cock
that Mick said would have pushed the winner even harder, but for a few pin
feathers.
Third came A Miller’s Tufted Light Green cock, which was a good bird,
but not as big as the winner.
Best Opposite Sex was C & S Meachin’s Tufted Dominant Pied Cinnamon
Grey hen.
Best of Colour: Cheatley & Alcorn, 2nd S W Beach, 3rd A Miller, 4th D Moss, 5th C & S Meachin, 6th D Norman, 7th K Bruce.
Mick commented that a lot of birds in this group were not in condition, with lots of pin feathers apparent.
Young Bird
Best of Colour: A Brown – Full Circular Crested Skyblue cock – SB479.71.10
Mick states that the Best of Colour was a clear winner for A Brown; a Full
Circular Crested Skyblue cock of good size and crest but not in A1condition,
with one or two pin feathers apparent.
Cheatley & Alcorn benched another Full Circular Crested Skyblue cock
to take the runner up spot. This was a bird that displayed a good crest
but overall was not as big as the winner.
Third and Best Opposite Sex was S W Beach’s Half Circular Crested

Best of Colour: J G Grubb – Spangle Opaline Grey Green cock – JG11.79.09
This Challenge Certificate was won by J G Grubb with a superb Spangle Opaline
Grey Green cock benched in excellent condition. Geoff recalled that this
bird had good shoulder and head qualities with plenty of width of face and
good lift above the eyes. A very good winner on the day; it went on to finish
Fourth Best Champion Any Age.
Second place went to R & J & W Bowker’s Spangle Light Green
cock, which was another super bird with fantastic width of face and good
feather quality but with flights missing and not in good enough condition
to beat the winner.
In third place was J Thompson’s Double Factor Yellow Spangle cock
which was shown in good condition and had good head and shoulder quality.
Unfortunately, it was very unsteady during judging.
Best Opposite Sex was a Spangle Cinnamon Grey hen staged by R Hooper. Geoff
said that this bird was a super hen shown in good condition with very nice
feather and width of face and shoulder, but slightly flecked and was another
very unsteady bird during judging.

Young Bird
Best of Colour: J&C Huxley – Spangle Opaline Light Green hen – JCH7.49.10
The Best of Colour was benched by J & CM Huxley, from the Beginner
section. Geoof recalls that this young Spangle Opaline Light Green hen was
avery nice youngster with a good wide face, complemented by a deep mask,
bulls-eye spots and good marking. It was staged in a condition and was a
real credit to the owner.
Second and best Opposite Sex came from the stud of D J Brick. This was a
nice stylish Spangle Light Green cock with a nice width and cap, but spoiled
by an untidy mask but staged in otherwise, shown in good condition.
Third place went R Day’s Spangle Dominant Pied Grey Green hen shown

Second place went to R & J & W Bowker’s Spangle Skyblue cock;
again a very nice bird but not quite in the same condition as the winner,
T & L Jukes benched a Double Factor Spangle White cock to take the third

Best of Colour: B E Sweeting – Spangle Grey cock – S5555.265.10
A Spangle Grey cock benched by B E Sweeting was awarded the Challenge Certificate.
Jerry said that this superb young cock was presented in good condition,
so much so that it went on to achieve fourth Best Champion Young Bird.
Second and Best Opposite Sex came from the stud of J Copeland. Jerry said
that this was a very big and powerful Spangle Skyblue hen but unfortunately
she lacked the condition of the winner.
S & J Blakey benched a Spangle Grey cock to take the third place; this
was a good bird, but lacked the quality of the first two in the line-up.

Best of Colour: A & D Woan Dominant Pied Grey Green hen – WOAN1.196.09
Dave awarded the Challenge Certificate to A & D Woan’s Dominant
Pied Grey Green hen and said that this was a lovely bird, with all the showmanship
of a true show bird of moderate length of feather, which enabled her to
present much of the desirable contours that are described in our pictorial
and descriptive standard. This bird possessed a full head and mask with
good spots which were unfortunately bunched together. She also had a dark
tail, but overall was a worthy winner. and vied for Best Opposite Sex in
Show in the final judging stages.
Second in the line-up and Best Opposite Sex was D Jukes’ Dominant
Pied Grey Green cock. This was difficult to fault, except for a dark tail
feather and poorly defined inner spots – probably shadow spots only.
The latter slightly spoiled the overall balance of the bird, but its strong
head and generous face impressed and it stood well throughout judging.
R Aplin benched a Dominat Pied Grey hen to take third place in the line-up.
This bird had excellent head qualities but marred by slight ticking, a missing
flight and a rough tail.
Best of Colour; A & D Woan, 2nd D Jukes, 3rd R Aplin, 4th N Johnston, 5th L & S Devaney, 6th R & M Miller, 7th J Hickton-Cragg, 8th A W Jennings, 9thJ W Mitchell, 10th D Norman.
Dave said that considering the rather poor numbers in this colour group, this was an excellent section for quality and was a pleasure to judge. It was pleasing to note that flecking was generally very light where it appeared. Congratulations to the owners.
Young Bird
Best of Colour: P Hodgkins – Dominant Pied Cinnamon Light Green cock – H339.3.10
P Hodgkins won this Challenge Certificate with his Dominant Pied Cinnamon
Light Green cock. Dave said that this was a tall, strong bird and benched
in excellent condition. It was very clean and with pleasing, balanced markings
on the body and wings; a very smart bird that deserved its success.
Second in the line-up and Best Opposite Sex was D Page’s beautifully
strong Dominant Pied Cinnamon Grey Green hen which was spoiled only by a
rather grizzled (albeit faintly) cap. It had very good markings and a confident
stance and was a credit to its breeder.
M & T Rodgers staged an admirable Dominant Pied Grey hen which had very
good head qualities and well balanced body markings. This bird was very
well presented but could not overcome the disadvantage of a short tail and
a slightly ticked cap.
Best of Colour; P Hodgkins, 2nd D Page, 3rd M & T Rogers, 4th J Hickton-Cragg, 5th B Blackmore, 6th B E Sweeting, 7th T Salem, 8th L & S Devaney, 9yj K Humphries, 10th A Fretton.
Dave said that this was another good section, though a little disappointing numerically. Generally, most birds benched were in good to excellent condition and a credit to their owners. Can it be that fewer exhibitors are prepared to bench their exhibits other than in reasonable show condition?

This was a nice Recessive Pied Cobalt cock that was shown in good condition
and also had good markings.
A Dark –eyed Yellow cock benched by I & P Fielding was placed
third. This good quality bird was in excellent condition and displayed good
colour, but not quite the substance of the first two.
Best Opposite Sex was won by a Recessive Pied Cinnamon Grey Green hen benched

The Yellowface Cinnamon Grey hen that won the Challenge Certificate for

In second place and Best Opposite Sex came R & M Miller’s Yellowface

SECTION WINNERS
CHAMPION
CHAMPION ANY AGE Judge: Ron Payne
Best Champion Any Age
L Martin – Grey Green cock
Having already won the Supreme Award, this outstanding Grey Green cock,
benched in excellent condition by Les Martin had to take the top award in
the Champion Any Age section. It excelled in length and size, had superb
width across the head and shoulders and displayed a good, deep, well-spotted
mask. An outstanding youngster when it won last year that has developed
into an equally outstanding adult.
Second Best Champion Any Age
L Martin – Skyblue cock
This super Skyblue cock was another bird from the stud of Les Martin, and
another bird making its second appearance at the Dome. This was one of those
birds that had everything you could ever wish for in a top quality exhibition
budgerigar and was benched in excellent condition. It displayed good width
across the face with good directional feather and plenty of lift above the
eyes. Add to these outstanding features a deep, well-spotted mask, good,
even colouring throughout and you soon understand why it was Best Champion
Any Age at last year’s show; but, of course, this year it had to be
content with second best behind the Best in Show winning Grey Green.
Third Best Champion Any Age
Freakley & Ainley – Spangle Cinnamon Grey cock
This superb Spangle cock was another bird that could win in the best of
company. Benched in excellent condition by the Freakley & Ainley partnership
it was a well-marked spangle that exuded great style, plenty of width and
feather above the eye and good spangle spots on a lovely deep, wide mask.
Judge, Ron Payne’s only comment on this bird was “wonderful”.
