The Budgerigar Society - 2006 Club Show Report

bis2006Saturday and Sunday 18th & 19th November, 2006 saw the last BS Club show to be held on this, now almost traditional, week-end. This show was planned as The Royston Simpson Memorial Show, following Royston’s untimely death. The show proved a fitting tribute to the work he did for the society in raising the Club Show, as an annual event, to a new level. Despite his passing, the show will hopefully continue to benefit from his influence in having a forward looking and enquiring attitude to what is possible and will become more so in the future.
With this attitude fresh in the show committee’s thinking, and with the full support of the BS Council, (and after listening to what many in the fancy have demanded..), from 2007, the show will take place on or around the last week-end in September – next years dates being September 29th & 30th. This will be the arrangement initially, but like all new ventures will be seen as a trial venture and assessed on its merits after the first few shows, there still being some misgivings in the fancy on the change’s effects on the show calendar generally.
In the event, this show proved to be a great success. The entries in competitive classes were a little down (although happily, the Juniors bucked this trend), a total of 2,845 birds being entered by 193 exhibitors and there was the feeling that some fanciers, who for some time have been unhappy about showing so late in the year had decided to ‘hang fire’ for ten months and show at the next one! -perhaps only time will tell, but many are predicting a far greater turn out next year.

This will, of course, bring challenges of its own, because it is acknowledged that the Dome is not the largest possible home for an event such as this. However, it is recognised that the Foyer area, which can be rather chilly and even somewhat foreboding in mid-November (and perhaps becomes worse when ‘enhanced by memory’) will be a far brighter and more conducive setting in September next year.

But, all that is in the future: back again to 2006! Proving their consistent progress through the fancy, and especially in BS circles, the successful son and father partnership of Richard and Michael Miller took the top award with their excellent over-year Violet hen, a bird which has been admired in the fancy since last year and has matured into a very desirable all-round hen. The other top award was taken by another dark factor blue, this time a truly splendid Cobalt Cock from the strong team of Brian Sweeting, which challenged strongly for the premier award and will no doubt do so again next year as a fully mature bird.
Our congratulation to both these winners and to the recipients of the Best Opposite Sex awards, D Havenhand who took the Young Bird award with his Cinnamon Grey Green Hen, the partnership of Devey and Wright who were similarly successful with their powerful Cinnamon Grey Green Cock.
Congratulations also to C Corser who triumphed in the Junior Any Age classes, going on to take the Best Junior award , and to Lewis Murray, who once again dominated the Young bird section, taking the top two awards.

Judges Dave Cottrell, Eddie Geary, Ally MacAulay, Dennis Cairns, Mick Freakley, Adrian Richards, Ken Middleditch, Ron Pearce, Andy Chick, Cor Booster, Tony Hayes, Michael Ballard, Phil Reaney, Vince Scott, Ian Ainley, David Woan and Dave Game had quite a task on their hands sorting out birds which, I felt, were generally up on quality over those of the last couple of years. There were certainly more birds which stood out and in their subsequent comments, many of the judges referred in glowing terms to birds which had failed to take a first prize, and even some which were not ‘in the cards’.

This competition carried through to the decisions on the final, major awards and there were two or three tied votes when it came to those decisions, so this part of the adjudication took rather longer than usual. The events as they unfolded were watched by what seemed to me to be a larger than normal gathering, indicating that the interest in the exhibition side continues to expand, to some degree. There was, in this particular arena, and even greater sense of the kind of excitement which we witness annually at the televising of Crufts, so there remains great hope that the fancy is turning around.

Full credit must go to Dave Hislop and his team who organised this event with such aplomb and efficiciency. There was a sense, more than ever, that everyone working at this show, at all levels, did so with enthusiasm and dedication. The result was a very happy, relatively trouble-free occasion which seemed to be enjoyed by all visitors, exhibitors, non-exhibitors, fanciers and non-fanciers alike.

As in past years, a seminar was held on the two mornings of the show, the longer one being held while judging was in progress. Speaker at both sessions was Dr Bob Travnicek and, particularly for those of us who have not had the pleasure of attending his lectures in the past, this was a very rewarding experience. Most of us there are not scientifically or technically minded and Bobs expertise, however casually he demonstrated this, was very easy to appreciate. In fairly wide ranging talks relating his personal experiences on a range of subjects, he encouraged us to look closely at matters of our own husbandry, the management of our birdrooms and in considering our pairings, particularly for the rarer varieties.
If there were present any fanciers such as those who I have heard openly decrying the value of the knowledge and study of genetics, particularly with the limits of their own birdrooms, they must surely be now thinking differently, because Bob was able to open our eyes to the possibilities and challenges with which some knowledge on the laws of inheritance present us.
Both talks were in the form of presentations illustrated by slides and this addition was of great help. I am surely not alone in hoping that a similar opportunity will occur again – perhaps at a convention in the future?

Any Age Best of Colour G & P Norris
“I found the winner of this colour group a bird of true exhibition quality – a true showman. The runner up was also a very good bird, with real substance.
Best opposite sex was fourth in the overall line-up – what I can only describe as a nice bird!”

Best of Colour G & P Norris 2nd D Leadbetter 3rd E Brooke 4th L & A Partington (Best Opp Sex) 5th D Mullally 6th R W Brown 7th L A Murray 8th D Mullally

Young Bird. Best of Colour J Donovan
“The group was headed by a first class all-round hen, which thoroughly deserved the award of this CC. Second in the line-up and Best opposite sex of colour was a wonderful young cock – a true showman which was very close in quality to the winner. The owner should be truly delighted to have bred this bird.
Overall, it was a pleasure to judge these young birds, which are a credit to the breeders.”

Any Age. Best of Colour J & L McGeehan
“This section was headed by a Dark Green cock which possessed excellent qualities, good Solid colour and good size. Additionally, this was a real showman - all round a very nice budgie.
Runner up, and Best opposite sex in colour was a lovely hen: her size and stance made her an excellent exhibit and this was enhanced by her very good colour.
This was all round a very nice class to judge. The birds in the lower sections were also of a very high standard.”

Best of Colour J & L McGeehan 2nd J Donovan (Best Opp Sex) 3rd D Hart 4th D Page 5th D Mullally 6th Greg Cameron

Young Bird Best of Colour G & P Norris
“This certificate was taken by a very nice dark green cock, which had size, conformation, colour and excellent deportment. He was far and away the best young dark factor green.
The runner up, from the Beginner section was not quite as good as the CC winner, inasmuch as its condition was not so good, but it was all round still a good bird. Third place was taken by a hen, which was a very nice bird although somewhat lacking in size. Its good colour and excellent deportment completed the picture
A lot of birds down the line-up weren’t quite in the required condition and general quality tended to fall away.”

Best of Colour G & P Norris 2nd E & R Anderson 3rd L Pennick (Best Opp Sex) 4th R Nawarauckas 5th L A Murray 6th R Wilson 7th T & L Jukes 8th D Scott 9th K & E Summersgill

Sky Blue | Judge - Cor Booster - Total Entries - 148

Any Age Best of Colour - B Collins
“This Skyblue cock was in super condition; it stood very well, but head feathering was a little soiled. (Tip: wash as many times as necessary)
Runner up was a very nice exhibit – another cock- which displayed excellent depth of face and large spots. Despite this, the bird was not of the quality to take top spot.
Fifth in the line-up and Best opposite sex of Colour was a Junior bird – note that two of the top three placings were Beginner and Junior, justifiably beating the higher status birds. This hen was a top quality exhibit which stood very well and begged to be given this award. The variety markings and depth of colour were excellent.

Best of Colour - B Collins 2nd R & M Miller 3rd L Hutt 4th C & E Williams 5th G & P Norris 6th L A Murray (Best Opp Sex) 7th L & A Partington 8th A M Dean 9th B Collins 10th C W Randall

Young Bird Best of Colour - J Donovan
“The section was led by a young cock which displayed top quality features. Chest feathering was a little ruffled. This bird stood up and demanded attention
The runner-up was also a bird of excellent quality, although this was hampered by its being a little nervous. The condition of its cap was not 100%
Best Opposite sex came from the fourth in the line-up, a hen of obvious high quality, but out of condition. However, she was of much higher quality than her class opposition.
Throughout all sections the standard was very high. The Champion young birds class was the main rask of the day. Many top exhibits were to be seen; on another day the results could easily have been different
In class 505, these Novice entries also demanded great attention: all ten benched entries were a credit to their owners. All birds had qualities which demanded close judgement and many good birds were placed lower due to fine details of either condition, deportment or opalescence”

Any Age Best of Colour R & M Miller
"A violet hen took the certificate in this section. She was well turned out and displayed width of
head, mask and spots which were nice and deep. A good quality hen anyone would love to own. Not surprisingly, she went on to take the premier award.
Second in the line-up was a Violet cock. This bird was somewhat unsteady, but showed good size and width, good depth of mask and excellent colour.
Another Violet, this time a Violet Mauve, took third place. This was a nicely balance bird but not
quite tight enough in feather and lacks the substance of the first two. A useful bird, notwithstanding."

Best of Colour R & M Miller 2nd B E Sweeting (Best Opp Sex) 3rd R & M Miller  4th R Hall 5th G

Young Bird Best of Colour B E Sweeting
“A Cobalt Cock took this certificate. This is a big, strong bird, which is wide of head, clean and has a good deep mask. Flights were a little tatty but overall this was a powerful bird.
Another power bird took the runner up’s spot. He is a little flecked but displayed a good lift
Third was a Violet hen, a long hen which was benched in good tight feather, but I would have liked it better had it been a little wider in the head and shoulders.
Fourth in the line-up – another violet - came a cock which was clean and excellent in type. A good bird which will win in slightly lesser company.”

Any Age Best of Colour D Havenhand
“This colour group was headed by an outstandingly faced Greygreen cock. It boasted a good solid spot and wonderful shoulder. This is one of those birds which makes itself hard to ignore when it stands right.
The second place in the line up was a cock from the Intermediate section, a bird of excellent length with good frontal blow. Only slightly narrower of shoulder than the CC winner
The best opposite sex of colour took third place in the line- up. She was in nice condition and was solid of frame. Rather more yellow in feather type than the other hens.”

Best of Colour D Havenhand 2nd M Rodgers 3rd M Rodgers (Best Opp Sex) 4th K & E Summersgill 5th J A Oxby 6th B A Wilson 7th S & R Newsome 8th A E Barrett

Young Bird Best of Colour D Swann “A wonderful face was the first feature of the winner of this CC, which came from the Intermediate ranks. This is certainly a top quality baby that is a true credit to its breeder.
Second in the line-up came a bird which is longer than the winner but not with the overall width to impress against such strong competition.
Best opposite sex of colour was a clean, solid hen, fourth in the line-up, which does not have the overall power of the cocks above her.
Of the other birds in the group I was particularly impressed by the runner up to the winner, staged by K Fagan. This pushed the CC winner very close but was just a little short in the body.”

Any Age Best of Colour H & D Hockaday
“A superb Grey cock this, with tremendous head quality, good frontal rise, excellent depth of mask and good spots. All round a worthy winner. Congratulations to H & D Hockaday on such a fantastic bird.
Second came from R & M Miller , a very good cock exhibited in superb condition, and displaying good shoulders with a well set mask: however, it did not have quite the power to beat the winner.
The best opposite sex award in the group was taken by a nice, solid, all-round hen from J & L McGeehan. This bird has good spots and mask.
Although this colour group lacked in numbers, the quality throughout the sections was very good. A special mention to the Grey cocks 2nd and 3rd in the Champion class, shown by G & P Norris and L & P Martin and 2nd in the Intermediate class, Hale & Davies who all exhibited top quality birds capable of winning major awards.”

Young Bird Best of Colour H & D Hockaday
“Another tremendous bird from H & D Hockaday took the young bird CC. He has good size, showing perfect deportment, mask and spots – a credit to his owners.
Second place on the line-up was taken by K Fagan with a top quality cock showing superb feather capping, pipped to the CC through just not having the power in the shoulder of the winner
In fourth place came the best opposite sex in the line-up, a strong powerful hen from Devey & Wright. This hen has a nice browy cap, but could do with a little more depth of mask.
As with the adult birds, there were good quality birds down through the sections. A special mention to the second (R. Steele) in the Champion class; an exceptional Grey cock whose missing flights cost him progressing further, and to J McGovern, who exhibited a fantastic young hen that was held back by slight ticking and erratic behaviour. Nevertheless, this bird went on to win Best Beginner Young Bird.”

“An Opaline Dark Green cock of good size, condition and deportment, took the certificate in this colour group.
Second in the line-up was an Opaline Light Green hen which has good width of head, clean headed, but was a bit unsteady.”
Third in the line – up was a strong Opaline Green cock which was short of one spot but was reasonably clean, with good markings
Fourth was from the Beginner section, a very strong bird which headed a small but good class. This bird would win at most shows. This was a reasonably strong colour group

Best of Colour B E Sweeting 2nd R Steele (Best Opp Sex) 3rd A & C Broom 4th D Mullally 5th D Cowie 6th D Cowie

Young Bird Best of Colour R Steele
“A nice, clean-headed Dark Green hen headed this section and her size and good all-round qualities were particularly enhanced by excellent deportment.
Second, and best opposite sex of colour, came a Light Green cock which displayed a good frontal rise and deportment
Overall, this was a good class of eight birds
Third in the line up was an Opaline Dark Green hen, slightly ticked and carrying some degree of suffusion, but was strong in head qualities.
Fourth was a light Green cock which was slightly grizzled and suffused

“Leading this colour section was a very good, clean cock, benched in excellent condition, and boasting a very nice stance. This bird has an excellent top end and good colour.
The second bird in the line up was, unfortunately, way out of condition and a long way behind the winner.
Best opposite sex spot was taken by a very nice hen which was clean, with good colour, but a bit small.
Overall, quality was poor once past the first three.”

Young Bird Best of Colour J Newall
“This group was headed by a nice, compact bird, very clean and a very nice specimen for an Opaline. Of good size, this young bird also displayed nice colour.
Second was another nice bird which just missed out
A hen too the third place and the best opposite sex spot. This bird lacked in size but had good colour, was well staged and clean.”

“A very good Sky Blue cock took the adult certificate . This bird is both of good all round quality and stylish
Second in section was a Sky Blue hen – a bold bird this with good width of head and face and a worth Best opposite sex of colour
Unfortunately, all the Opaline adults were not in the best of condition, but there were some very good examples of the variety in all classes.”

Young Bird Best of Colour R & J Barton
“ The young bird classes were headed by a good cock, which was the fittest there: a nice bird which would have benefited from being larger.
Best opposite sex was also second in the line-up, a stylish hen which showed good deportment and had very nice facial features. Unfortunately, this hen was a little soft or she would have gone all the way.
I thought that the young opalines in general were better than the adults, but condition played its part and I lost a few very good birds to it.”

“This colour group was headed by a Beginner bird, a good clean-headed bird which is broad and of good size . Condition could have been a little better on this class of bird.
Second in the line – up came from the Champion ranks and ran the winner close.
Third in place was the best opposite sex of colour, a nice hen which was slightly flecked. This bird has good size and deportment.”
Fourth in the run was another Beginner bird, a strong hen slightly marred by flecking.

In third place, another cock showing good condition and size.”

“A Grey Green cock was top of the shop here ; a bird of good overall Quality with super face and good length and size. He led a good class and was pushed hard for his place
In second place was a bird from the Novice section; an excellent bird but one which apparently lacked in cage training.
Third in the line-up, and best opposite sex in the group, was a good hen which was not in the best of condition.
The overall quality of the birds dropped off from this point, possibly because of the entry being low”.

Second in place was the best opposite sex bird, a bold cock in feather-perfect condition. He displayed nice shoulder and head qualities.
The standard overall was good in the challenge certificate group. However, many of the birds were slightly out of condition which was reflected in their position in the run-down”

A hen took the second place and Best Opposite sex of colour spot. This was another well p[resented bird – a skyblue hen- which again was feather-perfect, Another bold bird and an excellent show hen.

“The top award in this section was taken by a hen, a Light Green which was of goods size overall for a hen. Colour was ‘a bit shady’ but this was a nice hen.
Second in the line-up, and Best opposite sex of colour, was a cock with good head quality, but was marred by a number of missing flights.
In third place another hen, this time a Grey green. A good bird this, but rather out of condition and lacking something in size so overall lacked the quality of the two birds in front”

Second was another hen, from the Intermediate ranks, a well-sized hen with good spots, but unfortunately slightly flecked.
The Best Opposite sex was the only cock in the show of this colour, in a colour group which was rather poorly supported.”.

“A very good cock, not in the best of feather condition, but far ahead of anything else in the group took the certificate. His wing carriage was unfortunately poor but his colour was good
Second in the line-up was a very good hen, best opposite sex in the group. In very nice colour and showing nice directional feather above the eye.
Runners up were generally of poor quality all the way through the any age section apart from a few birds, and the overall colour was poor too. Not the same quality and competition as observed in previous years.”

Second was another nice hen again in good condition. Not as big or as thick through the neck and shoulders as the winner, but still nice.
Fourth place was taken by the first cock in the line-up, which took the best opposite sex spot. A bird of good colour and reasonable condition
Again, the overall quality was poor but there were some nice young birds here, especially amongst the hens. Second in the Champion hen class was almost as good as the certificate winner.”

“This section was headed by a cock in super condition: a large bird and a real showman as well. He was shown to perfection and it seemed that he really wanted to win.
Another Albino cock was runner up. Not the size of the winner but again in very good condition
The fifth placed bird was the best opposite sex of colour. She was a good hen but could not really compete with the four cocks ahead of her.
This was quite a good section. It was a pity that the fourth bird in the line-up was not in better condition or he could have pushed the top birds. This class, once settled, was steady and a credit to the owners.”

Best opposite sex was a nice stylish cock, which was also second in the line-up. From the Beginner ranks, this bird just lacked the size of the winner.
Third was another cock, again stylish but lacking the facial and head qualities which would have allowed it to go further.

Second place in the line-up went to a Dark Green. This was a good bird, but was a little short. Nevertheless, a very nice colour.
Third was the best opposite sex in the group, a well-faced hen with good width of shoulder
After the top birds, they unfortunately fell 0ff a bit, but saying that, the top birds were a credit to the Yellow wings.”

Best opposite sex was a Violet hen, second in the line-up, which was of good size with good clear wings and contrast. This hen sits well but is not as wide in the face as the cock which beat her
There were some good and useful Cobalts and Violets on show but most were too darkly coloured in the wings”

“A Cobalt hen was the victor in this group and was an easy winner on the day because of her very good size, wing markings and stylishness: she sat well throughout judging.
Runner up and Best opposite sex of colour was a Skyblue cock . Again, a stylish bird this. Wings were quite wqell marked but she was beaten by the size and quality of the CC winner
There was a similar quality throughout the rest of the birds in the line-up from second place downwards.”

“A Cobalt Full Circular cock took the certificate deservedly. This was a bird of good size, spots and showed well throughout
Runner up was a Skyblue cock, again full circular, but this one was slightly out of condition
Third in the line up was a hen which was thus placed best opposite sex of colour. A cinnamon Dominant Pied full circular, it showed well but was smaller than the first two in the line-up”

“A Yellow full circular Crest cock which displayed a good crest, was benched in good condition and displayed these features well.
A Lacewing Yellow full circular hen which was slightly smaller than the winner took the best opposite sex spot.
I felt that overall, the young birds on display in this certificate group were of the better quality”

“A well marked Spangle Grey Green in excellent condition, a powerful bird that stood well on the perch, a very good example of this variety marred only by the solid spots as opposed to the desired bulls eye spots. It possessed good head quality with good directional feathering. A credit to the exhibitor.
Second in the line-up was an Opaline Spangle light green with superb head quality; certainly a very good budgerigar, unfortunately let down by condition and a total lack of spots.
Best opposite sex was a solid hen, this exhibit stood tall while being judged. She was slightly out of condition and with no spots could be placed no higher.

Condition was a problem with a number of exhibits on the day, and I believe the quality could have been better also, I was slightly disappointed overall.”

“A nicely marked Opaline Spangle Light green baby hen, with good width of face, staged in excellent condition. It also has the correct angle on the perch and showed itself well when being judged.
Best opposite Sex was a Grey green Spangle cock, with nice clean capping and in good feather condition, but being overweight, this detracted from its overall appearance. It also had a tendency to lay across the perch making it difficult to assess properly.
Although the quality overall was down from the previous years, and some birds were out of condition, there was still some quality exhibits to be seen. I enjoyed the problems involved with judging this variety”

“A Light Green cock took the Best of Colour certificate . Shown in good condition, it was of well defined body colour. Perhaps a little too much yellow on the wing butts
Second in the line-up was a good Grey cock ; a very good bird which was unfortunately let down by its mask.
Third came a Dominant Pied Grey hen. A nice hen this, but not good in stance in the cage. This bird took the spot for best opposite sex in colour.”

“This young Grey green cock was a clear winner mainly on condition and mask.
A very good Violet hen with good mask and colour impressed me but unfortunately it was short in tail. This hen was best opposite sex of colour
Third in the line-up came another hen, this time a Light Green, which showed a good face but had two dark tail feathers and a few dark flights
The best budgie in the line-up had to settle for fourth place as it was let down by its condition. It only had one spot and was short on flights”

“A Grey cock, which shows himself very well, and possessed good size, variety content and all round showmanship took this certificate, despite having slight flecking.
Second, and Best opposite sex of colour was a Grey hen, which had excellent conformation, was wide-headed and clean. Her markings were heavy but this is expected in hens. She was a very close second, just spoiled a little by the heavily trimmed mask. A good bird to take home!
Third in the line-up was a Light Green Cock. Fit good variety content but I would like to have seen a wider head.
Fourth came a good strong heavily marked hen but with the strength of birds at the top of the class, it was not strong enough – a useful bird for the breeding room . After the first five there was a quite strong drop in overall standard.

“A Violet hen led this section. She is a powerful young bird, very thick in the face but let down my near normal-marked wings. Overall, however, the best in the line-up.
A Skyblue hen took the second place. This large, long hen was narrower in the face than the winner and was additionally flecked.
Best opposite sex, and third in the line up came a Violet cock which did not possess the build of the hens above him, but was of reasonable length and variety content.
The fourth bird, a Grey green hen was of nice type but heavily marked.”

“A Cobalt cock with excellent size and shape of spots. A solid bird which stands well in the show cage was the winner of this certificate
Second was a Cinnamon Blue, well presented, and a great credit to its Junior owner. This bird was of excellent deportment and is a good showman.
Best Opposite Sex went to the fourth bird in the line-up, and Australian Golden face Grey hen. Again, this bird was well presented, although a little unsteady whilst being judged. Nice width of head”

“A large Cobalt Cock, again presented in excellent condition, annexed the top award in this colour group. This bird obviously enjoys the show cage; a big, bold bird with an excellent width at the shoulder, nice head and mask.
Runner up was a Skyblue cock which was well presented and displayed good size of spots and a nice face and mask
The Best opposite sex of colour came from fifth in the line-up: a smart and well balanced Australian Golden faced Cobalt hen of very nice proportions – an unusual colour. Nice width of head.”

“Best in the line-up was a very strong Clearbody Grey hen, which has a good head all round, particularly in width of face. Buff feathering served only to enhance its quality.
Another Grey Clearbody, this time a cock, and thus Best Opposite Sex of colour, which again showed good head qualities but somewhat marred by a slightly untidy mask took the spot for Best Opposite sex and was second only to the CC winner
Third place went to a very Bold Clearbody Grey, well marked with a bold mask and spots, but this was unfortunately carried through to obtrusive flecking.”

Second in the line-up came a Clearbody Grey cock from the Novice section, staged in good condition. This bird had very good deportment and variety content
A Clearbody Grey Hen took the third place. A very strong bird this, but flecking prevented it going further in the colour group
In fourth a Grey Clearbody, strong, smart and with firm colour contrasts, which made it a pleasant sight.”

“Taking Best of Colour was a White Skyblue cock. A strong bird in good condition, this cock is bold and good in deportment which enhanced his head qualities.
Second place in the line-up was taken by a Cinnamon Clearwing Sky cock displaying bold head, with good face, and also a pleasing contrast of colour/markings
Another cock took third place, a Greywing Grey cock – a good example of this variety with pleasing shape balance and deportment. Again, a good face.

“Best Bird of colour was an Opaline Grey White cock – a lovely bird this, buff in feather but shown in good condition notwithstanding. Would have looked even better had the mask been trimmed. A strong bird which draped over the perch a little.
Second in the line-up was also Best Opposite sex of colour. A lovely Yellow hen, good and robust, staged in excellent condition, she would grace any birdroom
In third place came a Greywing Greygreen cock, another strong bird displayed in good condition
Fourth was also a Greywing, this time a Light Green displaying many good qualities, including generally good stance, but tended to carry its wings a little high
