Early Season Event - Woking 2011 - Fri/Sat/Sun May 6th/7th/8th 2011
The Budgerigar Society is to stage two Early Season Events – which
will include a show, meetings, an AGM, a sale and a great social weekend
for members.
The first of these events is to be held at Woking in Surrey – Friday/Saturday/Sunday
May 6th/7th/8th 2011. Plans are already in hand for the second for 2012
in the North East.
The weekend is planned to be a great event for BS members and partners.
It’s not going to cost loads of money. Even the hotel, an up-market
Holiday Inn comes at a fantastic rate.
Three Lectures
Gerald Binks
There will be just three lectures, all entertaining and informative. It
will include a Judges’ Meeting on the Saturday morning. Gerald Binks
has agreed to come out of “retirement” to give one of the lectures
and give a power point presentation. Gerald says this is definitely the
only time he is coming out of retirement for this a local Surrey and Budgerigar
Society event for him!
Reinhard Molkentin
Reinhard Molkentin from South Africa will also give a presentation. Reinhard
has a huge breeding set-up and is producing some of the best Budgerigars
in the world. Reinhard was, before he moved to South Africa some 20 years
ago the top breeder in Germany and was instrumental in setting up the Germany
society for English Budgerigars! Reinhard was due to talk at the BS Convention
earlier this year but was unable to come due to illness. His English has
improved greatly and his Budgerigars are quite special and the photographs
of his birdrooms and birds are wonderful.
Ruth Manvell
The other speaker will be Ruth Manvell – senior Virologist from DEFRA.
Some will remember it was Ruth who was heavily involved with the Budgerigar
Society and some of its members when that unfortunate reovirus virus hit
the UK almost 10 years ago. Ruth’s work included various bird-related
viruses including Newcastle Disease and Bird Flu.
The Venue & Hotel
The event takes place at The Woking Leisure Centre in Surrey. The Leisure
Centre can provide everything we need including a massive show and sales
hall, which will be divided for our sole use. There are a number of meeting
rooms plus excellent catering, together with licensed bar facilities –
all available for our use.
There is plenty of parking and the venue is very easily accessed from the
M25, M3 and A3. Parking is plentiful, safe and excellent.
The headquarters hotel is the Holiday Inn, Woking. It’s a short walk
from the Leisure Centre and near to all the major shops of the high. Parking
in the hotel car park is limited but there is a public multi-story car park
next to the hotel. We have negotiated a fifty per cent discount on parking
in the multi-story car park through the hotel with Woking Borough Council.
Social Events at the Hotel and Trips
For the Friday evening there will be an informal Buffet Reception at the
hotel but there will also be a trip to the Dogs at Wimbledon Stadium for
those who prefer the excitement of racing. For those attending, it’s
the intention to arrange for one of the top Wimbledon trainers to “mark
your card” for the evening – hopefully giving everyone a couple
of winners.
On Saturday there will be a coach trip to Wisley Gardens the headquarters
of the Royal Horticultural Society.
A Dinner will be organised for the Saturday night with entertainment and
we are delighted that Pete Hutchinson of Club Show dinner fame will be organising
the tickets, seating and fronting the evening.
On the Sunday there will be another coach trip organised to Hampton Court
Palace.
The Budgerigar Show
A show will take place during both Saturday and Sunday with birds being
accepted on the Saturday morning. The show emphasis will be for 2010 owner-bred
birds with a reduced classification for owner-bred any age birds. There
will be Special Challenge Certificates for the 2010 owner-bred colour groups.
Judging will start at 1pm on the Saturday, with lifting of birds at 4pm
on the Sunday. Judges have now been booked and these include Peter Hutchinson,
John Alcock, Robert Ellis, Geoff Tuplin, Grant Findlay and Ian Clare.
We will be looking for sponsorship for awards and presentations to all the winners so if anyone would like to make offers please direct them to the event organiser – Roger Carr.
AGM and Judges Meeting
The Budgerigar Society AGM will take place on the Saturday afternoon with
a Judges Meeting open to ALL BS members on the Saturday morning.
Festival of Birds Sale & Club Displays
We will run this sale under DEFRA Guidelines and a General Licence so it’s
vital we keep a record of the Movement of Birds.
We are to organise a Sale and Displays to interest ALL bird keepers. The Sale will be open to the visitors and the public on Sunday from 10am to 3pm.
Trade Stands, Private Members’ Sales Tables and Club/Society Stands will be included and it’s amazing that following details of this event being published within the pet trade magazines the Trade are already asking for details. Clubs are being encouraged to include displays of an educational nature to attract any potential new fanciers to the hobby.
We will be contacting as many Trade Companies as possible that supply the
needs of bird keepers, offering stand space at £30 per six-foot run.
Tables might well be extra. However, there will be a discount offered to
all Traders who book and pay for their space by 31st January 2011. There
will be special reserved parking for genuine traders only to help with loading
and unloading.
Private Sales Tables will be available at £10 per table to breeders
only (not Traders) for the sale of birds and clean, used equipment only.
It is going to be a great weekend for BS members, an excellent show for
those 2010 owner-bred birds, and will kick the new show season off.
Probably more important than anything – it’s going to be a great
social weekend.
