The Budgerigar Society - Special BS Events
Club Show
The society has long recognised the value of getting as many of its members together on as regular a basis as possible. It therefore appreciates the work that the local, and area societies do in arranging regular meetings, shows and other events to allow fanciers to share their interest with fellow enthusiasts.
In its turn, the B.S organises an annual CLUB SHOW, known as the World Show, which for a number of years has been held at Doncaster, latterly at The Dome leisure centre, and is held at the end of September. This is a wonderful event, which attracts a very large entry of budgerigars, and is further enhanced by a wide variety of Trade Stands, selling fancier requisites, as well as stands manned by the Area Societies and Specialist societies.
Additionally, while judging is taking place, fanciers are able to attend a Seminar. This is always a very well supported event, featuring, as speaker one of the most well known successful fanciers.
(Visit the News, Updates and Contents page for a list of shows. The 2010 & 2009 event reports can be found here.)
Convention
Usually at five year intervals, the society also stages a Three-day Convention. The last 2 events have been among the most successful and were staged in Southport.
This week-end is always full of highlights, with very good speakers, a small show of high-class budgerigars and a Banquet, all held in the extreme comfort of a spacious hotel - and all under one roof.
The next one in this series will probably be held in 201 but to meet current high demand, the society is also in the process of arranging another "Don't Miss" event !! :-
2011 - An Early Season Event in Woking
The Budgerigar Society is to stage two Early Season Events - which will include a show, meetings, a sale and a great social weekend for members - one in the South 2011 and one in the North in 2012. This is a follow-up to the highly successful Spring Event held almost ten years ago, with a super show, speakers and a small number of trade stands.
The first of these events is to be held at Woking in Surrey - Friday, Saturday & Sunday May 6th, 7th & 8th 2011.
The weekend is planned to be a great event for BS members. It's not going to cost loads of money. Even the hotel, an up-market Holiday Inn comes at a fantastic rate. There will be restricted meetings, but entertaining as well as informative. It will include a Judges' Meeting on the Saturday morning.
You will see there is a lot organised for those partners who might not be quite so interested in the birds but always offer their support!
The Sale with Club Displays will be held to attract ALL bird keepers on the Sunday, coupled with an all-variety lecture on Sunday afternoon.
The Venue & Hotel
The event takes place at The Woking Leisure Centre - full address to follow.
The Leisure Centre can provide everything we need including a massive show and sales hall, which will be divided for our sole use. There are a number of meeting rooms plus excellent catering, together with licensed bar facilities - all available for our use.
There is plenty of parking and the venue is very easily accessed from the M25, M3 and A3. Parking is plentiful, safe and excellent.
The headquarters hotel is the Holiday Inn, Woking. It's a short walk from the Leisure Centre and near to all the major shops of the high street including that ever popular Mark & Spencer's Store. Parking in the hotel car park is limited but there is a public multi-story car park next to the hotel. We have negotiated a fifty per cent discount on parking in the multi-story car park through the hotel with Woking Borough Council.
Social Events at the Hotel and Trips
On the Friday evening there will be an informal Buffet Reception at the hotel but there will also be a trip to 'the Dogs' at Wimbledon Stadium for those who prefer the excitement of racing.
On Saturday there will be a coach trip to Wisley Gardens the headquarters of the Royal Horticultural Society. In the evening there will be a semi-formal group meal with entertainment.
On the Sunday there will be another coach trip organised to Hampton Court Palace.
The Budgerigar Show
A show will take place during both Saturday and Sunday with birds being accepted on the Saturday morning. The show emphasis will be for 2010 owner-bred birds with a reduced classification for owner-bred any age birds. There will be Special Challenge Certificates for the 2010 owner-bred colour groups.
Judging will start at 1pm on the Saturday, with lifting of birds at 4pm on the Sunday.
The Meetings
There will be meetings - BS AGM and a Judges' Meeting (which will be open to all exhibitors and members) and lectures during the Saturday and the Sunday. There will be three lecturers - an overseas visiting speaker, a top UK fancier and an all-variety lecture to interest all bird keepers. All lectures will be well illustrated with PowerPoint presentations.
Festival of Birds Sale & Club Displays
We will run this sale under DEFRA Guidelines and a General Licence so it's vital we keep a record of the Movement of Birds.
It's the intention of the Budgerigar Society to consider organising large sales in the future and this will be the first of many. We are to organise a Sale and Displays to interest ALL bird keepers. The Sale will be open to the visitors and the public on Sunday from 10am to 3pm.
There will be Trade Stands, Private Members' Sales Tables and Club/Society Stands. The first 20 Club Stands will be FOC but the space will be restricted and clubs will NOT be allowed to sell anything other than membership and club badges. Clubs are encouraged to include displays of an educational nature to attract any potential new fanciers to the hobby.
We will be contacting as many Trade Companies as possible that supply the needs of bird keepers, offering stand space at £30 per six-foot run. Tables might well be extra. However, there will be a discount offered to all Traders who book and pay for their space by 31st January 2011. There will be special reserved parking for genuine traders only to help with loading and unloading.
Private Sales Tables will be available at £10 per table to breeders only (not Traders) for the sale of birds and clean, used equipment only.
It is going to be a great weekend for BS members, an excellent show for those 2010 owner-bred birds, and will kick the new show season off.
The Sale and Display will do a lot to promote all bird keeping and provide that "something different" for all fanciers, giving them the opportunity to see and buy birdrooms, equipment, feed and may be that outcross - or those birds to get started.
Probably more important than anything - it's going to be a great social weekend.

Shows and Events
The B.S. encourages all affiliated societies to use these pages to advise the fancy at large of their programme of activities. it is felt that by publishing a calendar of such events, members and other fanciers will be able to plan their itinerary and to 'take in' as many 'budgerigar related events as possible through the year. It is worth considering that all fanciers can play their part in assuring the continuation of such events by giving them their support - and the society commends all these activities to them.
