If you have just recently taken up this hobby, or are a casual visitor who wishes to know something about our society and fancy, you may wish to follow a tour of this site, page by page, to find out 'who we are and how we work'.
To do so, please follow the link at the bottom of the first few pages to turn to the next page. The actual tour ends with "Budgerigars for Beginners" - then explore as you wish!
(For those who do not need this introduction to the society and fancy, the left hand column lists the links to pages on those topics which may interest you)
Founded in 1925, the society's aim is to provide care and information for ALL people interested in our World of Budgerigars. Whether young or old, male or female, large or small, rich or poor, irrespective of your way of life, creed, philosophy or orientations this hobby is open to ALL folk. You do not need any academic or physical qualifications, just an ability and will to nurture the creatures which come under your care. Pleasure in our fancy comes to folk from all walks of life.
We are, in those important respects, very much a society of equals !
In this very wide range of budgerigar fanciers, many of us have one particular aspect of the fancy that we enjoy. These range from keeping just a few birds in part of a spare room in the home, through to those who have purpose built aviaries in their garden or back yard, large or small, (as in the pictures to the right, which also appear in our guide "Budgerigars for Beginners).
You may be interested in keeping a colourful, ornamental colony of birds - breeding a few to sell as pets, or specialise in building up a collection in one or two colour varieties - perhaps, in time, developing into a pedigree stud. You may also wish, as your interest grows, to enjoy the thrill of preparing birds for show at small local shows and perhaps move on to larger area or national events.
Some of us, indeed, have been here long enough to enjoy ALL aspects of our great hobby, but whatever your interest, all are welcome in The Budgerigar Society.
Whatever your fancy, we want you to enjoy these pages, which includes a section for those members of our society who breed some birds for pets. Some of these will be in your area and they will no doubt be pleased to see you and show you their birds. Otherwise, wherever you are, there is a society - small or large - in your area which will be able to point you in the right direction, and will welcome you to their meetings, to increase your enjoyment of the hobby
We hope that you will find enough here to answer your initial questions. If you don't, please tell us as soon as possible and we will see what we can do about it ! Contact this email address herring57@btinternet.com with your enquiry about the fancy, or to comment about the content of this website. If you do not receive a reply within 10 days, it means this contact is away - but it should not happen too often, so please try again, shortly afterwards !!
Take a look at the two sections below for details of programmes (only two of many products available through the society) which give more details about the hobby, before you move on to the next page.
For New Fanciers - Budgerigars for Beginners
